Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Teaching first grade students how to identify and add coins is challenging. To meet this challenge, students must be given many opportunities to explore the value of a given coin and how to add multiple coins together.

Our wonderful school is located in sunny, Southern California.

My first grade students range from gifted and talented to below grade level. Our school has won many prestigious awards. We are a Nationally Recognized School of Excellence. Funding extra projects is difficult because we do not receive money from a Title I program.

My Project

To meet the challenges of teaching my young students about financial literacy I need them to be able to identify and add coins. I am requesting a Nook which has free and inexpensive coin counting apps such as Selling Lemonade, My First Money, and Learn to Count Money to name only three apps that teach kids how money works in the real world. Other apps such as Brain Quest for 1st Grade also teach the value of specific coins. The Color Nook will not only give students a self-checking independent activity but may also be used to view the Secret Millionaire's website that teaches practical money skills using an engaging game and video format. I am requesting the Allowance CD, money stamps and games to be used in math centers throughout the year. From my experience, playing interactive games is the best way to encourage participation from all students. The games are exciting and fun when compared to a boring worksheet.

Please help my students learn important money skills they will use throughout their life.

Financial literacy starts in first grade. Due to budget cuts, we are counting on your support to bring these basic math supplies into our room. The supplies I am requesting will be used for many years to come. Thank You for considering our math project.
