Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

We teach a group of amazing, curious, and hardworking general and special education students in first grade. About forty percent of our students have a range of disabilities, some of which include learning disabilities, physical disabilities, emotional disturbances, speech and language impairments, and Autism Spectrum Disorder. Like any other class, our students' abilities and interests span across a wide spectrum. All of our students require individual or small group attention. Each day, we incorporate all of their learning styles, interests, and special education accommodations into our lessons. Some of our students prefer visual or auditory cues for learning, while some require a more kinesthetic or tactile approach. Our students come into our classroom each day with a love of school and a desire to grow as a learner.

We want to be able to give them the tools that they need to succeed both in school and in life.

Last year, we were able to obtain a play cash register that our students absolutely LOVED playing with. This year, we want to create a financial literacy center where they can easily access the registers, play money, books, and games. With these materials, our students will mimic real life practices of a grocery store and learn important lifelong concepts such as budgeting, money value, and saving. This multi-faceted approach to teaching about money and financial literacy will allow ALL of our students to succeed!
