By the end of the year, I want my students to have an opportunity to manage, invest, and spend money through financial literacy activities. I want them to take ownership of their own learning by applying key concepts to financial situations.
My students are fifth grade students that attend a public school in Camden, New Jersey.
The school is located in a poverty-stricken area with a high crime rate, however my students have a high attendance rate and a strong desire to learn. The class consist of 6 boys and 10 girls. Fourteen out of sixteen students stated that reading was their favorite subject. Math came in second with two votes. I know they enjoy math so I want to spark passion for math through financial literacy and engaging money task. They are intelligent, hardworking, creative, mature, and curious individuals. However, due to limited resources at home and school, they do not interact with money as much as they need to understand financial literacy.
My Project
The supplies requested will provide an opportunity for student groups to manage, organize invest, and plan money making opportunities by creating a club budget. They will read financial literacy books during shared reading to build background knowledge and understanding. With this project they will also design and create an investment portfolio that will allow them to be money conscientious. They'll get to utilize many of the math concepts they have learned in class. Working in groups they must meet certain check points as they progress in creating their investment portfolio. They must design at least one negative investment then balance their budget. They must also calculate the average profits of their investment from start to finish. This activity provides students the opportunity to record findings and money management calculations in their math journals.
Thanks to PCW and other generous donors my class will get resources that extend financial literacy learning.
Also, the resources requested will help make differentiated instruction easier to incorporate into lessons to reach all learners needing spatial or kinesthetic support. Overall, the resources will allow my students to participate in activities that build financial literacy, teamwork, communication, and collaboration skills. All these skills are needed to be successful in school and life.
