This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students walk into our classroom every day excited for the new challenges that await them that day. Each day, they are reminded that they were selected to be in my class because I asked for the best students in the school and that's exactly what I got. I let them know that they can do anything if they believe in themselves as much as I believe in them.

I teach at a Title I school in Las Vegas where more than half of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch.

Many of their families struggle just to make ends meet. You would never know it from the passion and enthusiasm they show each morning when they come to our classroom. They want to be here because they know that if they give their best, they can achieve anything in life.

My Project

My project is intended to teach children about financial literacy in a fun and meaningful way. There are two ways that I hope to achieve this goal: by playing games that use money, and then by putting replicas of real money in the hands of children.

The only way we can get children to learn about money is to have them actually see the value of that money.

Games like The Game of Life and Monopoly force its players to make smart financial decisions. We can talk about opportunity cost when deciding whether to buy a hotel or not in Monopoly, while we can discuss the benefits of going to college in The Game of Life.

Speaking theoretically is all well and good, but putting actual money (or fake money that looks real) in the hands of a child is irreplaceable by any other kind of financial literacy game. We don't see enough of that at school and I intend to change that in my room.

I want to have enough white boards and markers for my students so they can work out how to make change without needed to be strong with their mental math. These lessons are more about money and less about computation, so I want to make sure we take that pressure off the kids.
