Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This year I am proud to be the team leader at my school. This means the world to me as this was my elementary school. As their coach/leader, I can experience so many of the different learning environments.

Seeing so many of my students every morning with an eagerness to learn has shown me that this has been the best professional decision I have made in my career.

I know that this year will be one for the record books not only for all the students and teachers but for me as well because we will work together as a village to make magic once again this year.

Our school is located in a low-economic neighborhood where about 90% of the students receive free or reduced-price lunches. Many come from broken homes that have been separated because of their dream to come to the United States or because of natural disasters. Some of the students in my school suffer from attention deficit disorder (ADHD), are ESL students (English as a second language), and/or have other types of special needs. Regardless of their challenges, though, the majority of the students are very determined and eager to succeed.

My Project

It is my goal for my students, many of which are students with diverse special needs, to develop financial literacy skills. After discussing the importance of earning, investing, and saving, our kiddos will have the opportunity to earn classroom money for things such as performing their class jobs, attending school daily, doing their homework, performing acts of kindness, and going above and beyond while meeting academic expectations. They will have access to the classroom online bank and will be given time to deposit and withdraw play money earned from their accounts. We will then establish a classroom store stocked and supplied with previously funded snacks, treats, school supplies, and the requested earbuds. Every week, the students will take turns running the classroom store while their classmates shop with the money they have earned. The students will use the money saved to purchase/invest in items such as basic supplies, snacks, treats, and the requested earbuds. The students will build their knowledge of financial literacy and strengthen their math skills by using online bank accounts and engaging in a series of online mathematics lessons using their personal devices and requested earbuds. They will print out account information, activities, and presentation charts and graphs using the class printers and create a journal with financial data. Given the fact that some of the students (those on quarantine or at home sick) in our class will be working from home as we engage in dual-modality instruction, I have included the AirPods in the cart to deliver instruction without interrupting the in-person instruction.

It is my hope that by engaging in this financial literacy unit of study, my students will learn the importance of earning, investing, and saving money.
