This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Economic stability is a goal that most people seek. For my students, though, the working world can sometimes appear like a proscribed and limited set of options.
My students come from families that work hard to make ends meet.
The cultural vibrancy of the neighborhood in which they live is not matched with an equal number of diverse and interesting work opportunities. By focusing on some financial literacy, it would give students an opportunity to contemplate how the world of work functions, perhaps as a way to inspire my students to think about ways for them to achieve their dreams.
My Project
My students need 50 copies of The Working Poor. Students will work together to read this book, in order to begin to understand some of the systemic obstacles that keep poor workers from becoming economically stable. Perhaps they will also be inspired to continue to work in school in order to increase their choices related to work.
These books will enable my students to understand interconnectedness of both the financial and political systems that impact people's ability to work towards a better life.
They will, I hope, be able to see pathways for how to commit to and advocate for real change both for themselves and for their communities. I also hope that my students will be able to make informed financial decisions as they enter college and the working world.
