My Students

As a speech and language provider, I see children with various communication weaknesses such as: understanding information that is spoken to them, being able to write down their thoughts, answers or ideas in grammatically correct sentences while remaining on topic in correct sequence, being able to produce speech sound associated with each letter correctly, being able to encode and decode, understand the content of a passage and answer questions about it, understand how sounds are combined to formulate words, how words can be broken down into smaller sounds when trying to read unfamiliar words, being able to carry our multi-step directives.

We are a Title I school which means that the majority of students qualify for free lunch.

Many parents that work two jobs which means less overall communication among family members due to the decreased amount of time spent together. Several of my students do not have access to technology once they leave school. They have a true desire to express their thoughts, feelings, ideas, and answers and want therapy to be presented in fun and creative ways. I love seeing students succeed. More success occurs when they remain interested and invested in the activity.

My Project

As I explored materials to purchase I realize that a great deal of the pictures utilized simply fail to adequately represent the students that I work with. It isn't easy for them to feel represented because seldom do the "models" share their complexions, nor are they see familiar environments and social realities.

I have a digital camera that I want my students to use to take pictures of themselves as well as the world and people around them; in the home, academic and social settings they are experiencing and we will then use the photos to describe detail, categorize, problem solve and make predictions.

I will also use them to create original written or verbal stories where the characters are more like the students themselves; in environments, they are familiar with. I think this will assist with creativity, self-esteem, and self-confidence.

In addition, the all in one printer will allow me to scan and edit worksheets to meet the individual needs of each student (differentiate). Each student in the session would get the same subject matter but amended to their own goals. I can also make copies of the work for them to take home while keeping their original work within the classroom portfolios.
