I am a Language Arts teacher at Middle School 88 in Brooklyn, New York. The population of my school and class is very diverse. Unfortunately, one thing that my students have in common is that many of them suffer from asthma or other allergies which can hinder their breathing- which, as you can imagine- can hinder their learning. In my two Language Arts classes, I have a total of 62 students. I have each class for 90 minutes each day. At least once during each 90 minute Literacy block, I ask my students to gather, with their pens and notebooks, on the classroom rug. I use this meeting location to introduce new lessons and teaching points to my classes. I request that my students sit on the rug when I am modeling a new writing or reading technique. In addition, during their own independent reading or writing time, my students often choose to sit on the rug for comfort and a much needed change of scenery, I am sure. And here lies the problem- the rug in my classroom, used by over 60 students a day for over 15 hours a week- is seven years old. It has been vacuumed, deodorized, and disinfected too many times to count. But after seven years, as you can imagine, we need a new rug. The current state of the rug makes it difficult for me to ask all of my students to have a seat on it. Many students complain the the rug affects their asthma or makes it difficult for them to breathe. Obviously, I would never force a child to sit on or near something that makes them physically uncomfortable, so as a result, we are a little more spread out than we should be, which makes it a little more difficult to teach the lesson. The purchase of a rug would be a terrific surprise for my students. They would look forward to coming to the rug for mini-lessons and there may even be some competition to grab a seat on it during independent reading/writing time. Having all of my students together in one small, central location (the rug) makes it much easier for me to convey the lesson to 31 pairs of eyes and ears. My students love the current rug we have in the classroom- some even volunteer to vacuum it on a daily basis. But trust me, no one would be sad to see our old, faded, and (I hate to say this) dirty rug gone, and a brand new one in its place!
