My Students

My students are all special needs students in District 75, which means they have severe disabilities. They live in an urban area in Brooklyn New York. My students are all black and latino and in grades 9-12. They live in poverty. All of my students have learning disabilities, as well as emotional disturbances. They have difficulty focusing, staying on task, and following rules. My students have difficulty learning through traditional classroom methods and with traditional learning tools. They are smart and capable but need to be highly motivated.

My Project

My students are highly motivated by the use of technology and media. I have found that they express themselves best through filmmaking and music, as many have great difficulty with literacy.

I have been using my personal iPhone to allow my students to make short films, but they deserve appropriate equipment.

With the GoPro, filmmaking is a breeze! My students can easily use it to film, to edit, and most importantly, to reframe on the computer later.

We will use the speaker to play music, as my students work for longer periods of time in a calm manner, when music is playing. We will also use the speaker in our filmmaking.
