My Students

My high-achieving, college-bound students are inquisitive, reflective, and artistic. They are hungry to learn in an environment that promotes equity, curiosity, and play. My school is a unique public school experiences, as our campus is home to grades 4-12. Our faculty is committed to its students and their success on a campus that is known for its true sense of community and life-long relationships.

My challenge is to encourage the development of the mental lives of young people through writing and literature.

One way to do this is by enriching that curriculum with skills and experiences that expose how literature is related to art, science, theater, technology, and their own lives.

My Project

Last year my kids felt great about shooting short films that demonstrated knowledge of some pretty tough material, including novels by Salinger and Tolstoy and essays by Montaigne, Nietzsche, Descartes, Marx, Anzaldua, and others. They dressed up as these figures and conducted expert interviews on film, writing scripts that showed off their research skills, critical reading ability, and acting talent.

I'd like to continue to encourage all learners to demonstrate what they know creatively!

This year, I'd like to expand the project and offer the kids some flexibility while shooting videos on their smart phones by providing them with portable green screens. With almost 40 kids in class, projects requiring kids to get up and move can quickly turn into chaos, and it's easy for them to get in one another's way. With portable green screens, I can have groups of kids shoot outside of my room as well as inside, so they won't climb over one another as they work.
