My Students

My students are an eager group of young scholars working in a low-income area (Title One school). They are hard-working, enthusiastic, inquisitive students from a diverse array of backgrounds and cultures. They represent much of the best qualities of our country. I am very proud of each student and plan to enhance their education by initiating a new Film Forward class.

Film Forward is a special new program designed to teach students a variety of film-making skills, build an appreciation for classic scenes from past movies and finally, to create their own short films.

The students' films will be short opinion pieces about relevant issues taken from today's news headlines.

Students will learn the basic elements of a persuasive essay and transfer these elements to visual media. Student groups will collaborate in the creation of each film. Subsequently, students will evaluate each project for its effectiveness as a persuasive piece and its' quality as a film.

Selected student films will be screened for community members at our school's Night of the Arts towards the end of the spring semester.

My Project

Today's student lives in a world inundated with visual media. Film Forward is a special project that will empower students by providing them with the tools necessary to better understand visual media and to create their own films.

Learning to analyze and create films empowers youngsters as they develop a better understanding of their world and the power which visual media provides to express ideas and effectively communicate with others.

Individual storyboard notebooks, collaborative poster boards, colored pencils and a microphone are essential tools that will help students develop their ideas into films. Created collaboratively, each film will address a topic that students find both relevant and controversial.

Participating in Film Forward will help students learn the importance of research, writing and teamwork for the creative process. They will develop their organizational skills in order to select powerful images to communicate their ideas more effectively. Additionally, they will practice the teamwork necessary to edit their films for the content and precision necessary to make them convincing and successful.
