Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Since bringing photography to my school, I have had the pleasure to see the world through a different lens. I work with 60+ 14-17 year olds that live and go to school in the South Bronx. Many of them, prior to this class, have only used their smart phones to capture special moments in their lives. For 75% of them, it was their first time holding a DSLR camera. I love how they were able to capture the emotion of their peers, the everyday magic that happens within the school, and display their own individuality.

I want to continue exposing my students to new things to make sure they have a high school experience they will always remember.

During this summer I received an email that said, "Miss I love taking photos since taking your class, look what I took during break"- It was a beautiful picture of the Brooklyn Bridge. These students are special because they see the world in a very unique way and want to share those experiences with others.

My Project

This summer I traveled to Berlin, Germany, an experience many of my students may never have. I visited C|O Berlin, a photography museum that had multiple polaroid photography exhibits. I have chosen Polaroid Originals Instant Film Color Film and Black and White to help students capture emotions through film. Film photography is a field that has once died but is slowly making an appearance again-I would love for my students to experience it! Film photography takes patience and discipline.

During this time in the world, especially while living in the city, it is very easy for us to not take the time to take in the beauty of our community and our people.

These materials will help my students SLOW DOWN, TAKE A BREATHE, and APPRECIATE what is right in front of their faces (besides their cell phones).
