My Students

In the mind of a 4-year-old, money comes from a bank. Stick in a card and cash comes out. They don't know how it got there, but assume it's for the taking by all who desire. My students need to know the basics of a bank, the joy of spending money they've earned and saved, and the different kinds of money.

I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-olds motivated to learn about everything!

They are enrolled in the School Readiness Language Development Program (SRLDP). Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, the goal of this program, unique to LAUSD, is language development. Students receive instruction in their primary language, Spanish, as well as English language development. When I was in school, many of us began babysitting or delivering newspapers in fifth or sixth grade. We earned some pocket money and learned valuable lessons about budgeting and saving. The days of such jobs are long gone, but the need to acquire financial literacy is not. Although my students probably won't be working for at least a decade, there's no time like the present to begin building their money sense.

My Project

Most of my students consider all paper money to be dollars and all coins are quarters, play money and magnetic money will be implemented in directed lessons, small group activities, and independent centers. Such exposure will allow them to sort, group, count, and compare the different coins and bills. We will learn the names of the coins and and learn a little about the people depicted on the money. The Coins Patterning Box will provide the opportunity for hands on interaction as students reproduce and create patterns with coins. Whenever possible, I select activities that allow the children to practice multiple skills at once. The Toy Store and Grocery Store Writing Boxes fit the bill by combining writing, vocabulary, dramatic play, and financial literacy that is developmentally appropriate for Pre-Kindergarten. Our classroom revolves around literature, so a collection of fiction and non-fiction books about earning, saving, and spending money will complement the other materials.

Some may say 4-year-olds are too young for the world of finance.

If we were talking about 401K's & stock options, I'd agree. When it comes to comparing coins and bills, learning their names, understanding how a bank operates, the importance of earning, saving, and spending wisely; this is prime time! Equipping my students with financial basics will give them a base on which to build a sound, responsible, and informed economic future. In the Pre-K piggy bank of financial literacy, every penny counts!
