My Students
Could you imagine building a house without tools? Our students are missing the tools the need to build their learning at school. We need sensory tools (fidgets, tactile balls and chewable jewelry) to help the keep their bodies calm and to focus.
Each child has a unique set of sensory needs.
Sensory tools like chewys and fidgets can be used to help a child stay focused and organized throughout the day.
My class is a kindergarten inclusion classroom. It is part of a program that is designed to teach high functioning autistic children. We have three children with ASDs and eight typically developing children. In addition to the standard academic curriculum, specialized curricula and strategies that foster relationship development, adaptive skills, sensory/motor development, self-regulation and language and communication development are infused throughout the day.
My Project
Many children with an autism spectrum disorder also have problems with sensory integration. By providing students with sensory tools, I hope to give them the ability to remain engaged, focused, and in control more often. When students become over stimulated, disorganized, or overwhelmed these fidgets can help them regulate themselves.
It can be very difficult to watch a child struggle and be uncomfortable in their little world. Teaching ASD students, you learn what triggers their meltdowns and what works and what does not work for each of them as individuals. These school tools with be added to our toolbox that student may use. They will help meet the needs of these students so they can function and flourish in the classroom. Please, help my students get reflex balls, fidget tangle therapy, and much more to help focus in school.
From our own resources, my co-teacher and I have provided limited low budget fidgets and chewys to our students.
Our current fidgets are heavily used and are of poor quality. Many of them have already popped. We hope to offer long lasting safe "non-toxic" sensory tools through this project.
