Filling in the Holes of our State Curriculum

Help me give my students diverse literature that completes our current, hollow state funded curriculum. These books will allow students to see social groups and topics which are left out of our school texts.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a public school where 41% of students are White, 35% Asian, 11% Hispanic, 1% Black, and 12 % Multiracial. Our school does its best to celebrate diversity in all regards (cultural, ethnic, physical, and neurological), but with current events regarding racism and inequality throughout our nation, we as educators must question whether what we are doing is enough. My personal goal everyday is to create an engaging, safe, and comfortable environment for each student who walks through the gates of my school. However, the longer I teach, the more I notice how our state funded curriculum and core, grade level literature is geared more towards the 41% of our school population, rather than the diverse 59%.

My third graders are highly intelligent, diverse, and deserve educational texts which highlight all groups of our country, and not just the Caucasian majority.

My Project

The rigor of educational standards continues to increase the more we start acknowledging the true analytical potential of our students. We have standards which challenge students to determine the central theme of a text, analyze an author's purpose for writing, discuss a character's motivation for his/her actions, make text-to- self/world/text connections, investigate the role of rules and laws in a community's daily life, and understand the economy of a local region. With such high expectations set forth for students, why must we limit the text by which they practice and master these skills upon?

The paradox of education is precisely this, that as one begins to become conscious one begins to examine the society in which he is being educated - James Baldwin.

We expect students to make real world connections to themes which do not mirror those they are witnessing in the media today. We tell students they have endless opportunities, yet do not show them people who look like them in those high esteem positions. We expect children to grow into respectful and educated adults, yet do not have diverse enough curriculum to teach them true multicultural respect of others' heritage.

These mentor texts are going to be a powerful addition to our classroom library. We will discuss the power of protests and standing up for our beliefs. We will analyze how we are influenced by our own implicit biases. We will learn that a conversation to understand another's viewpoint is not synonymous with a debate. As a teacher, it is not my job to impose my own personal opinion on students, but rather provide them with facts and relay the importance of supporting their own opinions with facts from multiple, and reliable, sources. My students provide me with hope for a respectful and informed future
