Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are 3rd graders from the Bronx. Our class is mixed special and general education students. My school is located in the poorest congressional district in the country. The area was extremely hard hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. Many students in my class rely on the school to provide basics such as meals, winter coats, backpacks, books, and other basic school supplies.

My Project

Our classroom bookshelves are looking pretty bare. Due to the disruption in our in-school education system, many books have gotten lost or stayed in students' homes. In addition to this many of the books that we do have in the classroom are old and falling apart. Unfortunately, we've had to let them go because they could no longer be enjoyed by students.

Our learners come from many different cultural backgrounds.

As a result of this, We want them to see themselves represented in the characters in our books. Our learns are also diverse in their reading abilities. We need to make sure we have a wide variety of books at many levels. We want all of our students to be able to read and enjoy the books on our shelves.
