Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Like all good teachers do, we want the best for our students. I currently work as a second grade teacher in New York City. My students come from a melting pot of different backgrounds and socioeconomic status. They are always excited to share any knowledge they have on a topic. As a class they love a good class read aloud and have so many exciting thoughts to share.

Although my students have the ability to be successful, many of them deal with situations that hinder their success.

Unfortunately, many of my students live in shelters and have parents who work all day and night. Many of them come from low socio-economic families.

They come to school wanting to do their best work but lack some of the resources that would get them more excited and engaged with all tasks. The method and environment in which they learn best varies greatly. I try to incorporate a variety of learning strategies, group work, and alternative seating and learning options to ensure that each student's needs are met, right where they are! They are truly a unique and special group.

My Project

These materials will help enhance the reading life of my second grade students. Many of my students do not have the resources to have physical books of their own at home. The books we have in the classroom are often the one opportunity they have to dive deeply into their reading life.

Picking books you are interested in, is the foundation of enjoying reading.

These donations will help aide in variety of our classroom library. When students book shop, I hope they will be excited to read these texts. It will help to enrich the reading lives of my second graders.
