My Students

My students are amazing 14-25-year-olds who have decided to earn their high school diplomas. We work extremely hard to bring to light all issues these urban young adults will face upon walking out our school doors. We bring reading levels up from 3rd grade to 9th or higher, teach real-life math skills, learn about adversity and how to overcome it, and so much more. My classroom is their safe place where all needs are met and Universal Design of Learning is used hourly. These ladies and gentlemen find success and their talents through hard work and resilience.

My Project

Students in my school are diverse and intelligent. They, unfortunately, have not seen images of themselves in books where the main character succeeds in life despite many struggles. We are looking to fill our bookshelves with today's stories about children of color. We will be using these books to help engage students in reading daily and to increase their reading levels towards 8th grade and beyond.

The books that are on my list are ones that show how black and brown people made changes in the world and found success after suffering through life-changing events.

It is my hope that my students will learn strength and hope through these stories. These books will also be read virtually in our daily zoom sessions to allow discussions and growth no matter where the students are learning.

Any and all books are appreciated to help grow our library. As a small charter school, we don't have the monies available to grow the library on a yearly basis.
