Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Middle school is such an unbearably hard time for so many. My goal in teaching middle school is to make it a little less difficult while giving my students the resources they need to succeed. I teach at a Title I school, which means that the majority of our students qualify for free and reduced-price lunch.

When home life is turbulent, I want my classroom to be a place where students are able to relax and feel at home.

Our school provides food boxes and resources to any families in need, and we pride ourselves on taking care of our own community. Many of our students still enjoy their teachers and coming to school and we feel like it's our job to set them up for success to continue to enjoy learning as they move onto high school. So many of our students have been through so much, we want the school to be a safe place for them.

My Project

I pride myself on my classroom library and take lots of time to vet the books and even read them myself. Each book in my library is meticulously catalogued so students can easily find the perfect book for them. My library is color coded but not by reading level, instead, by an experience in the book. Many of my students have told me they hate reading because none of it applies to them. My goal is to change that.

Currently my classroom is dominated by fiction books, and according to the software I use to manage my library, seriously needs non-fiction books.

These are the books that were most recommended to me based off of my student population and their reading levels. I look forward to using these books in my classroom to help students with their non-fiction comprehension, and learn a little fun stuff a long the way :)
