My Students

The P.S. 193 Bridge Builders are part of an urban/suburban community in Whitestone, New York. Our school serves approximately 550 students who come from a plethora of different backgrounds and home environments. As the makerspace technology teacher this year, I have set forth many different project based learning experiences for students based off of their curriculum.

I truly believe that exposure to an engaging classroom library will set these students up for success, both academically and social emotionally.

My goal this year is to incorporate all subject content matter while teaching students their technology standards, named ISTE. I seek to challenge students to show their abilities with their varied learning styles: kinesthetic, auditory, visual, etc. One thing remains in common with all of my students - they are highly motivated and take ownership of their learning as problem solvers and critical thinkers.

My Project

As an elementary school teacher, I know just how powerful a carefully selected read aloud can be and the impact it can have on my students, young and old. Picture books can instantly captivate a fidgety class of 1st graders, bring wide-eyed wonder to 5th graders and spark meaningful and intellectual conversations with students of all ages and backgrounds. One of my favorite ways to incorporate read alouds in my classroom is by using them to kick start STEM challenges.

These books are perfect for setting the stage for a challenge by sparking background knowledge a promoting a healthy sense of growth mindset.

Some of the themes within these books include growth mindset, perseverance, inventive thinking, engineering design, real world applications, diversity and ideas that can change the world. Help us open the window to new possibilities for our students!
