This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

About seven years ago, my students and I decided that the feminine hygiene products being offered to students on campus were not meeting their needs, when they were being offered at all. The machines on our campus are often empty, and the nurse's office does not have an appropriate variety of options to meet individual student needs.

To address this problem, my students have created a feminine hygiene cabinet in my classroom, and any student or teacher on campus who needs access to these products has access.

Since we created this cabinet, I have had students from all over campus, many of whom I've never even met, come by to get products when they need it. We never say no, and they do not have to pay or provide anything in return. We have been keeping the cabinet full through student and parent donations, but we'd like to offer even more without relying on the same kids to provide.

Though my own students only number around 100, probably about 60% female, this cabinet is available to every female student, teacher, substitute, etc, on this campus at any time. We are a relatively large school, so we're talking about roughly 700-800 students who will have constant access to this supply. They never have to ask permission or explain why, they can just take what they need when they need it. It's worked beautifully so far, and I hope to see it grow even more to help even more students.
