Fighting Stereotypes Through Fashion

Help me give my students the opportunity to fight stereotypes. Students will be making t-shirts, decorated with stereotypes they have personally come across in their lives based on their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, etc.

My Students

Since our school follows the Expeditionary learning methods, students are active participants in their own learning. Our school focuses on reflection and discourse, to allow students to be leaders of their own learning. This means that they hold themselves accountable, and are able to explain the work that they do and their current levels just as good as their teacher can!

Students in our school strive to be honest and reflective learners and value our community as a safe place to fail for the purpose of succeeding.

They are asked to focused on "service learning"- going on into their community to provide service to those in need. This connects them to the outside world, gives them purpose, and helps them to realize their potential as catalysts on change.

My Project

After reading The Outsiders, students take part in a case study to dispel stereotypes in our school. They share personal stories of times in their lives they felt typecast based on their identity. Students discuss stereotypes attached to their race, religion, gender, etc. They then brainstorm a quote of slogan fighting that particular stereotype, and create a t-shirt with this slogan.

Students feel empowered and see themselves as having the potential to crush stereotypes that they once felt crushed by.

The t-shirts are then worn and shared with classmates and family members during a Presentation of Learning Night. Students are given the opportunity to create the shirts in any way possible, but resources are limited. Many students felt pressure to "afford" materials or be artistic. We want to make sure all students have the ability to create the shirts, so their slogans and ideas are highlighted.
