Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have never been more passionate about a topic as I am about social justice. However, sometimes my students have a hard time caring about the issues of the world because there are so many problems facing them in their own backyards.

My high school seniors live in one of the poorest congressional districts in the country.

They attend a public high school in the inner city. Our school has faced tremendous budget cuts but we are managing to make things work. My students are full of energy and willing to learn new things. They are witty, bright, funny, and they put a smile on my face daily. I know that they can make their lives better and I am privileged to play some role in their transition from high school to college.

My Project

This year our theme is social justice and our next unit is repressive regimes. While the government teacher explains the election process and democracy in the U.S., I will be teaching them about North Korea's repressive regime in English class. I truly believe that if my students saw how others live, they will not only learn to take advantage of the privileges they have but they will also be willing to lend a hand and speak out. With 35 copies of Barbara Demick's vivid book, I believe that my students will get an accurate depiction of life in North Korea.

While reading the book I believe that my students will be interested, saddened, and ready to do something about it.

The reading of the book will be paired with an activism component. It would be very hard for me to do this work without this book!
