I am currently a fifth grade teacher at P.S. 1 in Staten Island, N.Y. I work in a school that is over 120 years old. I have 28 students this year and sometimes my roster goes up to 32. I am writing to you in desperate need of new school desks. Many things in my school need an update but this has become a necessity. I have desks that are half broken. I have some desks that are meant for third graders if you are lucky. They have no sides to them so everything falls out. My room becomes a disaster. My floor becomes a supply store. Some students are too tall and need to sit in kindergarten chairs so their legs fit under their desks. They need individual desks that can hold their books and other school supplies. It might seem crazy asking for this, especially since I work in a middle class area. However, since we do, our staff receives nothing. We pay everything out of our own pocket. I am asking you to please consider this proposal. I need my students to feel comfortable where they are sitting. I want them to have a productive learning environment and not worry what books, papers, and pencils are falling out of their desks. I hope to hear from someone. My students would be thrilled to have desks that they feel comfortable in.
