My Students

I first taught my students last year when they were in the 5th grade. They are the most advanced of their grade, and so I had the great honor of teaching them all day. The students all live on one of Chicago's most violent and notorious blocks, in conditions less than ideal, yet they come to school daily, with their trauma and tragedies, ready to learn. Together, we've built rockets, analyzed elections and made Trump political cartoons. We have created our own 10 Point Platform after the Black Panther Party.

My students' ability to learn and grow, ask brilliant questions, and become lifelong learners despite their trauma motivates me daily.

They blow me away daily with their ability to have Socratic Methods over new math concepts, and the mathematical work they do is like none I've never seen.

This year I have the honor of teaching them again in 6th grade, which is a gift to me. Last year we mastered our understanding of Dystopian societies and novels, Civil Rights, long multiplication, division and fractions. This year, we've dived into ratios, Percy Jackson, Ancient Greece, and are continuing where we left off in studying rocketry.

My Project

This project will cover the cost of round trip bus transportation so we can go on a field trip to the Field Museum. We would like to go to the Field Museum because we've been studying Ancient Greece and Ancient Egypt. My students, although born and raised in Chicago, have never been to that museum or most of Chicago's museums.

Students will apply their learning in a real world environment and will get a hands-on experience exploring a topic they have only been able to study in school.

Teachers at my school are responsible for covering field trip costs due to budget restraints, so your help donating to this project is greatly appreciated. Our students lack a lot of exposure to the world, and even to Chicago and the beauty and culture it has to offer.

This year, I would really like to have my students experience a visit to the Field Museum.
