My students love science! I have had the joy of learning about several science topics with them this school year, including insects and plants. These have been exciting and fun thanks to the hands-on nature of our activities. (We have cultivated our own mealworm colony and are growing our own plants.) Unfortunately, for many young students (and particularly for students with special needs), science topics that are less experiential are very difficult to understand. Astronomy and the solar system are fascinating but difficult to grasp for my six 4th and 5th graders with autism.

Several of my students show interest in the solar system regularly--one asked today if he could look through a telescope at the stars. But nighttime field trips are an impossibility for my elementary school students with autism, even before considering that we live in New York City, not exactly an ideal star-gazing city.

In order to bring the solar system alive for my students, I would love to bring them to the Hayden Planetarium at the Museum of Natural History. We can experience a simulation titled "Field Trip to the Moon" that gets the ground shaking and takes students on a tour around Earth's orbit. In anticipation of such an exciting trip, my students would also benefit from a variety of solar system materials to use in our classroom. A poster of the "new" solar system (all of our books currently list Pluto), a card game called Space Shuffle, a solar system model kit, and a light-up home planetarium that projects stars, planets, and meteors on the ceiling are all materials that we can use to make solar system concepts more touchable, visual, and interactive.

You will make it possible for my students to truly understand the solar system through a fun, hands-on field trip and fun, hands-on activities in the classroom. I can't begin to imagine the wonder on their faces when they get to look up at the "stars" on our classroom ceiling or feel the rumble of the simulated rocket at the Hayden Planetarium. Please consider making this trip a reality. Thank you.
