My Students

Our school is a Title I school in an urban school district. Our school is not large and services students that are 100% eligible for free/reduced lunch. This means that many of my students do not have access to supplies and resources that will help them practice the skills learned in school. Even though there may be challenging home and neighborhood issues, my students come to school every day eager to learn. They enjoy attending school for the academic and social interactions. In addition to being economically disadvantaged, these 4th grade regular and special education students also have emotional needs that require frequent and varied activity in the classroom.

In our classroom, we have a time when the classroom becomes our stage.

We act out a story we are reading together as a class. This helps students build fluency and confidence when reading. I have an amazing group of students who deserve a chance at being the best they can be. That is why, I want my children to experience a live show at the theatre.

My Project

Attending live shows enhances knowledge of the plot, increased vocabulary, improved ability to read the emotions of others, and a memorable experience. Students benefit greatly from going to see live theatre. Field trips to live theatre helps build tolerance and content knowledge.

Going to the live theatre will help make my students more understanding and accepting of different people.

That is the tolerance and social perspective of going to the live show. When students are exposed to something outside of their normal world, they gain some greater understanding and acceptance of that broader world. Students improve their content knowledge by attending live theatre because they develop a better understanding of the plot and vocabulary compared to just reading the book and watching the movie. Attending a live play and allowing my students to have that in-person experience, is significantly more effective than watching the movie after reading a book and important for their learning experience.
