Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This year I am teaching Advanced Placement, Honors, College Prep Biology, and Environmental Science. I am also advising the Eco Mindfulness and Garden Clubs. My students care about the environment, gardens, and campus beautification.

My students need various field guides and books to learn about the diverse plants, animals, fungi, and insects in our local and state environments.

The field guides on plants, animals, tracks, mushrooms and fishes will be great resources to add to our collection when my students go on hikes to local watersheds, streams, and beaches. They will use the field guides to help them identify what organisms they see. I also want the students that participate in our field trips to learn how to nature journal. Some students are very into making observations and wanting to collect it in a place to keep forever. I think it would be a great time for those students to start creating and making it their own. There isn't really a right or correct way to observe nature and record it for their personal leisure. The books by John Muir Laws will offer a variety of ways for students to express their observations and feelings in their notebooks. I think this will be a great resource for students to keep, develop, and evolve.

We also need various "finder" field guides. These field guides have built in dichotomous keys that can offer students another way to identify organisms they come across.
