This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Stop rocking your CHAIR! Stay focused!! SIT STILL!!! Imagine never having to say things like these to a child ever again. That's exactly what we're trying to do.

Our students, coming from an inner city Kindergarten through 6th grade charter school, are intelligent, enthusiastic, and extremely energetic.

Sometimes a little too energetic. The school is 90% latino and has great spirit but while our students are amazing, one of the greatest difficulties we face is keeping our students focused so they can learn. They have a thirst for learning but their restlessness gets the best of them at times. We want to direct that passion and energy in a productive manner without extinguishing their motivation. These are our students and they are precious.

My Project

Simply put... our students' hands get them into trouble. They need something to do with their hands while their minds are hard at work. Not only will stability balls help many students stay focused when learning which will in turn keep them out of trouble, it will also help them to build better posture, stronger core muscles, and expose them to new and exciting ways of staying fit. As a Health and Physical education teacher my primary concern is the health of my students and as teacher who works in an urban charter school with no gym that is not always the easiest subject to tackle. I love my students and I care for every one of them. If I can not only help them stay focused in class but also open their eyes to another activity they may participate in for the rest of their lives, all the better. While these are only a few stability items I know they will make a world of difference to all of my students.

In closing, if this project is successful it will help to increase the health of my students but also to convince the administration and staff members to provide support to place stability balls under every students' bottom which is where I hope this will lead.

Because when every students is focused on learning AND healthy, that is a wonderful school.
