This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students come from San Francisco. Since the 1960s, the Bayview-Hunters Point community has been cited as a significant example of marginalization. It remains "one of the most economically disadvantaged areas of San Francisco."

Root causes include a working-class populace historically segregated to the outskirts of the city, high levels of industrial pollution, the closure of industry, and loss of infrastructure.

The results have been high rates of unemployment, poverty, disease, and crime. In the 1980s, the Excelsior neighborhood became predominantly Latino with the arrival of refugees from Central American wars and immigrants from Mexico.

Our students are so resilient and bright, but sometimes they aren't able to focus in class because they experience tremendous amounts of trauma and stress. I work in the Health and Wellness Center, and I am a Community Health Outreach Worker. I often see students struggle with stress, trauma, illness, and depression due to things happening in their homes and in their communities. I am committed to providing a safe, clean, and comfortable space for all students.

My Project

Silent fidgets can be very helpful self-regulation tools at homework time, in waiting rooms, classrooms, in the car or school bus, for stress relief or to wind-down. The items I've requested are ideal for school classrooms to keep restless fingers busy, bodies relaxed, and minds focused. Therapy putty is a fun and effective occupational therapy tool for finger and hand strengthening. Plus it makes a fabulous therapeutic fidget (figit) and sensory diet tool. All therapy putty is not equal! When selecting occupational therapy supplies for finger and hand strengthening, therapy putty is a top choice of pediatric therapists, hand rehab experts, and other OT and PT professionals.

Fidgets can be a very effective and helpful self-regulation tool!

We will use fidgets and sensory balls for calming and alerting, to promote focusing and concentration, decrease stress, increase tactile awareness of fingers/hands, and as a way to keep fidgeting fingers busy.
