My Students

I am a school social worker in an urban school district. I service high school students who suffer some kind of mental health disorder. Post-covid has been especially difficult students. Students have had to learn to re-engage in school after 1.5 years at home. More and more students are identifying that they are struggling with anxiety and depression. My students mainly come from poverty stricken homes and some are in foster care.

My students work very hard to stay engaged in school despite outside stressors.

We have worked on sustaining and maintaining healthy relationships. For most of my students school is a safe haven as their home environment is very chaotic. The staff and I want to make the students experience as happy, safe, and fulfilling as possible.

My Project

As stated my students in the high school are all suffering with anxiety and depression. Many of them have returned to school after such a long time unable to focus and re-engage. I bought a few fidgets from my own money to have in my office but because I service 100's of kids I am in need of so much more. When kids are suffering from anxiety and depression it is difficult for them to engage in talking. The fidgets have helped ease their anxiety and focus on the fidgets which has allowed them to engage easier with their social worker while playing with fidgets. Stress balls, pop-its, cubes have been very popular for students in clinical settings to help open up and engage in a therapeutic relationship
