My Students

For some students, every day presents a new challenge. Fidgets may look just like toys, but some students truly need that extra input whether it be tactile, olfactory, or visual, to help them achieve their full potential.

A common difficulty in many students is difficulty attending to classroom instruction and completing assignments independently.

My students attend school in a variety of settings from general education placements to self-contained classrooms; however, they all have one thing in common. Sometimes all they need to raise their level of success is the right kind of materials.

My Project

The fidgets, weight pencils and scented stickers I have requested are all things that I have seen become successful accommodations for children in the classroom to help them become more independent. The child who constantly breaks pencils can become frustrated with writing in general, and with a weighted pencil, we may be able to prevent some of that breakage by providing the extra input through extra weight and thus lessening the frustration. A scented sticker, on the hand, may help a child stay seated in the classroom at his desk by providing the extra "smelly" sensation. These types of accommodations are easily put in place in the classroom, making it easy for both the teacher and student.

My hope is that with access to a variety of sensory sensations and options, the children I work with will be able to raise their level of independence in the classroom.

With the right materials along with the right instruction, the sky's the limit!
