My Students

I work with an amazingly diverse and talented group of scholars. While they may come to school each day with their own challenges, they persevere through the middle school years, which are not easy for anyone!

The majority of students that I work with have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and receive Special Education services.

Most of the students I support have Emotional/Behavior Disorders or Autism Spectrum Disorder. I learn more from them each day than they could ever take away from my classroom. I am grateful with each incoming class of 6th graders and love watching them grow through 8th grade.

My Project

My students need items that they can use for self-regulation while they are in a learning environment or a social setting. Many have increased anxiety in this setting and have responded well to using fidgets in order to calm themselves and show more focus. They are able to engage in their learning. In addition, when they are becoming upset, these items help them to calm down before being ready to learn again. Students have helped pick out the items and have explored which items best support their needs.

The stress balls provide sensory input as the students squish them, the spiky rings are a tactile tool used by my students that like to pick at things or want sensory feedback in their fingers.

The pencil toppers allow the student to have a small fidget accessible while working on written assignments. The liquid bubbler and rainbow ball puzzle are used at the break space in my room in order to help the students distract from frustrating situations.

As the year progresses, these items wear down and break so having reserves is always appreciated as the student may rely on the item daily.
