Fiber Arts: Needle Felting

My Project

Fiber arts is an ancient and diverse form of artmaking that spans across cultures and traditions. Fiber arts includes quilting, embroidery, knitting, weaving, rug hooking and many other art forms that use These art forms have often been relegated to the category of “crafts,” rather than being recognized as fine art. However, there have been many successful movements advocating for crafts created by skilled and talented artisans to be acknowledged as true art forms. Despite this progress, students in schools--and especially here at Sentinel--don't always have opportunities to explore and practice fiber arts.

This semester, I am teaching a sculpture class and plan to incorporate a unit on fiber arts, specifically needle felting.

To begin, students will create small terra cotta planters using clay. From there, we will dive into the art of needle felting, transforming loose wool into intricate, condensed shapes. Throughout the unit, students will explore how their art is shaped and influenced by their community, culture, and the rich history of artists who have come before us.

To bring this vision to life, we need some essential supplies. I am requesting consumable materials like wool and thread, as well as durable tools—including felting needles, needle handles, and felt bases—that can be used for years to come.
