My Students

I work with an amazing group of resilient, funny and engaging students ranging from Pre-K through 5th grade. Many of my students receive special education services. Most come from a community that is equally as amazing and resilient but struggles with the typical challenges of any underserved neighborhood. Our kids come from mixed family systems of all types, shapes, and sizes.

The ongoing pandemic and the return to school from remote learning has been a difficult transition for many students and adults.

Many of our students were able to feel extra comfortable at home during remote learning - whether this meant wearing pajamas, being able to get up and walk around as needed, using fidgets or other sensory inputs throughout the day, or standing/stretching/laying down during lessons. Coming back to school in person and being expected to follow pre-pandemic rules has made for a challenging transition. Supporting our students needs goes beyond learning and has to include their physical and emotional needs as well. Our students are amazing and deserve everything they need to feel good every day!

My Project

Knitting, crocheting, sewing and other fiber arts have long been shown through research to decrease anxiety and depression and improve overall focus. Manipulating threads and strings with our hands is incredibly calming and therapeutic and many of our students have been eager to learn!

My students are so excited to start creating their own hats, blankets, potholders and other textiles!

These materials will be used through various counseling and lunch groups to explore feelings while we engage in the therapeutic work of creating items with our own hands. Our students are so excited to learn new (and evidence based!) coping skills to deal with the academic and personal stressors they experience on a daily basis.

I am requesting materials for basic knitting and crocheting, as well as knitting loom machines and items to assist students who might struggle with more complicated stitches. Easy sewing kits will be perfect for younger students to create their very own stuffed animals!
