This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a new librarian in a Pre-K-5th high poverty Elementary School, I have met my share of challenges. Many of the students are below grade level in reading, and many of them do not own a single book. Due to the world we live in, surrounded by and immersed in technology, the students sometimes have a hard time with "unplugged" activities.
In order to get today's students interested in learning about books and using informational resources, librarians have to make it as interesting as the technology they spend so much time with!
My Project
Students today really struggle with reading. While technology has improved our lives in many ways, it has also increased reader struggles. For many students, print words are simply not able to capture their attention with their brains being hardwired for the noise and flash of TV and video games. For this reason, librarians and educators have to try to make books as interesting as possible.
These felt board stories will greatly enhance the fun of my lessons, especially in lower grades.
They are very versatile and can be used as manipulatives by the students as well as being great visual aids.
I will use the felt storyboard to display each of the individual stories during story time. The fairy tale felt puppet stories will be used through my 8 week fairy tale unit with kindergarten and 1st grade, as well as in shorter units in 2nd and 3rd grade. The Lakeshore storytelling kits each contain 6 sets of felt characters that correspond with popular children's books. These 12 stories will be dispersed through our the year in other various units.
