My Students

My students are amazing helpers and excellent listeners.

These students are kind to one another and love to engage in hands-on learning.

These students are hungry for learning and they love to stay active. They are a group of happy children. COVID has impacted students in the last year and a half by giving them incredible amounts of change and uncertainty.

My Project

Having a feelings rug where children can be taught to take deep breaths will help align with the Nevada standard "Ensure safe and healthy in-person learning environments conducive to students’ social, emotional and academic development." Learning how to take a deep breath in kindergarten can mean the difference between a big upset or knowing how to handle stress. One of Nevada's core Social Emotional Competencies for children is "Self-management: The ability to regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations. This includes managing stress, controlling impulses, motivating oneself, and setting and working toward achieving personal and academic goals." A feelings rug will provide the place to learn to name feelings and take deep breaths.

The subscription to Let's Find Out Magazine by Scholastic will provide a regular non-fiction reading for the young children, thus meeting the ELA standards for kindergarten in multiple areas but specifically in Speaking and Listening/Comprehension and Collaboration.

This magazine discusses varied social-emotional and health topics like hand washing, making friends, and how to be kind. These magazines are discussed with the whole class, then students engage in a short writing or reading activity in the magazine, and then the student can take it home to share with their families. NRS code 392.457 specifically states the importance of " Collaboration among parents, families, and schools to support learning by pupils and healthy development of pupils at home and school." This small magazine can be a bridge between home and school and carries positive messages of what is being learned at school. Optional is to use the magazine as an at home learning homework as it is focused and "doable". This connection between home and school strengthens social and emotional support of students in response to the effects of COVID.
