Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What makes my students special? My students have been through more things in their young lives than most adults will go through in theirs entire life span.

My students are K to fifth grade boys and girls that live in an urban community in east Harlem.

Some students reside in low income housing, shelters and some living doubled up with family.

As the school social worker, my role is to help our students learn and develop social-emotional skills that will help them cope with the difficulties they may be experiencing.

Unfortunately, some of our students have experienced traumatic events pre, during and after covid. Helping them verbalize and process their emotions related to their experience can be difficult. During my individual and group sessions, I use therapeutic books, games and activities to help students explore what they are feeling.

My goal is to provide a supportive, safe and caring environment for all students and make the process of working through their emotions in not only a therapeutic way but also while having fun.

With students returning back to schools this year it is important that I create a warm and nurturing environment for the students I serve.

My Project

Social Emotional Learning and Education goes hand in hand. With out the tools that is needed to learn socially we can not learn academically. Students will learn through games and real life play while working on worksheets that will help them learn how to get in touch with their feelings so that they can clear their minds and learn. Whether its a social emotional game or a worksheet of activities, my project will help my student grow both socially and academically, they will learn that all emotions work together to form feelings.
