Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our children are dreamers. They are eager and motivated to learn. They come from families who are hard-working, and they are teaching their children that same motivation for learning. Many of our families fall below the national poverty levels; some experiencing the situation of being homeless or are home insecure. In addition, English is a second language for the majority of our families or they are bilingual households.

Every child deserves a great start.

Our children deserve no less than great. Our children are getting ready for Kindergarten, and it is our job to prepare them! Having the right materials and devices is a large part of preparing students for school success!

My Project

Sometimes children feel unsafe in a new environment; sometimes this space is school. Other times children feel very angry or sad and are not sure how to express those feelings in an appropriate way. In order to help children deal with these feelings, we give them a space in the classroom with materials to help them calm themselves and that they can be alone. Children using the safe space are allowed to be there when they need it for as long as they need it.

Children deserve to be safe; children deserve to be alone if they need time apart from peers.

I will use the materials requested in this project to help me to create a safe space in our classroom for children to be alone. This project seeks a crib mattress and a body pillow to create a soft and comfortable environment. This project also seeks baskets to store toys for fidgeting and books and an emotion chart for learning how to deal with strong emotions. Finally this project seeks weighted sensory beads so that we can create weighted stuffed animals for children to hold while in the safe space. Holding a weighted animal has been shown to help calm children who are distressed.

We would love your support on this project because when children feel safe and comfortable while they are at school, they can learn. You must meet a child's most basic needs first before they can learn and one of the most basic of needs is the need for safety.
