This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a Social Worker. The program is where all schools are located in the South Bronx. I am a member of the IEP team and support the social-emotional needs of our students and parents by providing at-risk counseling, and resources for multiple campuses. The majority of our students are from low-income families who are unable to afford basic necessities such as food or health products. The majority of students are eligible to participate in our free lunch program. Social Determinants of Health regarding Economic Stability, Education Access and Quality, Health Care Access and Quality, Neighborhood and Built Environment, and Social and Community Context impact their quality of life.

Students have limited knowledge regarding personal hygiene and accessibility to basic products such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, and soap.

Personal hygiene concerns are heightened as the students are experiencing different stages of puberty when needing feminine products and being educated on how to use them and the changes the body is going through. Attendance is impacted as a result of the difficulties faced during this time. Students' academic performance is impacted when at school and are worrying about not having personal hygiene products when needed. I would like to have tangible products to create hygiene kits for the students while educating them about personal hygiene and supporting their social-emotional needs.
