I am the intervention specialist in a second grade full inclusion classroom. Not only do I co-teach in the classroom, I also manage the IEPs and goals of the 9 students with disabilities. In the school system where I teach, more than half of our students are low-income students. More often than not, some of my students come to school without even their most basic needs being met. Even with these barriers, this does not stop my amazing students from coming to school eager and anxious to learn and be the best they can be!
My students' disabilities range from mild to intensive, so I strive to make sure all of my students learn, no matter their ability level, in this setting.
There is a lot of differentiated teaching and learning going on throughout the day to make sure I am meeting the needs of all of the students. This typically means I need to make sure I have a variety of resources at my fingertips to be able to provide my students with everything they need to be able to learn. My goal is to set them up to be independent, contributing members to society in the future!
My Project
I recently had a student who had to shower at school. This student revealed that their family recently became homeless. I will never forget this day for the rest of my career. It was evident that this student needed cared for that day. My colleagues and I scrounged up 2-in-1 shampoo, a clean towel, and clean clothes to allow this student to shower. I felt helpless for this student that day. We didn't have much, but it was enough to help them get through and they were very grateful for what we could come up with.
I never want to feel as if I cannot help my students to the best of my ability again, so I am writing this project in hopes of being prepared the next time this occurs!
I remember wanting to give this student shampoo, conditioner, a good bath towel, loofah, and most importantly, a blow-dryer so that no one would see their hair was wet.
All of these things will make such a difference along with the detergent to go with our newly funded washer and dryer for when situations like this arise. I love my students as they are my own children and I always want them to feel loved and cared for when they arrive at school. Please help me help my students feel clean and succeed!
