My Students

I teach a diverse and energetic group of 8th graders who thrive on engaging, visual, hands-on and meaningful learning activities. They love listening to music, playing games, and collaborating with each other. They care about equity, their identity, and sharing ideas. While they are eager to write about their experiences and share their opinions, they often struggle to find a book they can connect with and that they want to finish. Once they do find a book they love and they finish it, they ask me for another book just like it. This is my chance to get them firmly into the reading habit.

Imagine seeing a lively group of 8th graders rush loudly into the room, excited to take out their books and read; without any prompting, they settle into their books, and the room is silent.

This is what happens when my students can choose the books they want to read. In fact, rather than finding excuses and stalling, they end up asking for more reading time!

My Project

My goal for the 8th graders in my classroom is to nurture their reading habits so they enter high school with a love of reading. Reading widely and often is one of the best ways to develop a rich vocabulary, to improve writing skills, and -- perhaps most importantly -- to learn more about ourselves and the world. In order for students to develop the reading habit, my job is to provide books that they want to read. At this point in the year, many of my students have finally connected with a book that they love. Now they want more books just like the ones they've discovered.

The books I am requesting are by the authors they have discovered they love, the genres they crave, and the topics that intrigue them.

With this collection of books, I will be able to quickly respond when students ask me for more books just like the one they have finished. For instance, I have many boys who love adventure; now I will be able to introduce them to the wildlife stories in Gary Paulsen books. I also have a number of students who love stories about teens dealing with real life problems. I can't wait to hand them books by Sharon Draper. Your donations will make a huge difference in my classroom. There is nothing more rewarding for me than when I witness the confidence and joy of a student learning to enjoy reading. Thank you for your help in bringing books to my students.
