A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Fresh vegetables for our elderly community members in the dark winter days! We want to grow tomatoes, beans, and peas for our Yupik Eskimo grandparents. Our elders do not have money to purchase fresh vegetables. We would like to learn about gardening while supplying these foods for them.
We are a third grade class and we live in a far removed remote part of Alaska where days are short and most of the year brings snow.
Fresh vegetables are hard to come by and those that make it to the local store are high priced due to cargo costs. Our elders, who we value very much, can not afford these fresh vegetables. We also want to learn first hand how to grow foods that we can eat! What better combination than to learn gardening while feeding our grandparents!
My Project
We need grow lights to line our windowsills and light up our plant stands. We will fill trays with soil and seeds. Our room will be filled with the green of summer during the dead of winter as we watch our seedlings grow and take root. As mid winter approaches, we will harvest our peas, beans, and tomatoes to deliver to our elders. As vegetables are grown and given, so will our hearts grow and give. We will learn not only how plants produce things to eat but how caring for our elderly makes us better community members.
In a world where elderly are often moved into special homes, the Yupik Eskimo people help their elderly sustain a high quality of life by helping them continue to live in their own homes.
My students want to do their part in supporting their grandparents.
