My Students

Do you know the thrill of opening a new book, of breathless anticipation while you await the release of the next book in a series you love, or of finally getting your hands on a book you have been dying to read? My students are avid readers without the resources to have these experiences.

My students are brilliant, voracious readers who learned to be this way in our middle school reading classes.

When I get my hands on new books, they have epic rock paper scissors competitions to see who gets to read them first. Our school library is geared towards younger readers so the books in my classroom library are their literary lifeline. Because most of the students come from struggling families, books are a luxury few of them can afford. Our city library is a great resource, but the average wait for a new popular title is 6 months. We need a collection of high interest books. My students rush into class Monday morning to tell everyone what they read over the weekend. They are eager to share recommendations with their classmates. The most unlikely friendships have been forged over a shared book. Our class discussions are full of references to books. Out of my 10 years as a reading teacher, I have never encountered students who LOVED books so much.

My Project

A few weeks ago, I bought a copy of Kung Fu High School used from Amazon for one of my students. He has had a difficult road to walk in his 14 short years from time in juvenile detention to foster care to overcoming crippling depression. I didn't unwrap the package, just left it on his table for him. When he walked into class, he saw it, gasped, looked at me with a question in his eyes, and then pounced on it. He opened it like it was Christmas morning. When he saw the book. He hugged it to his chest, jumped up and down, and then threw his arms around me. His classmates watched with amazement. The #1 tough guy, the one who never smiled, was hugging a book AND his teacher. One of them asked, "Why are you so happy?" He replied, "No one has ever bought a book just for me before." Ever one of the books I requested is a book one or more of my students is dying to read. When the books arrive, the students will be ecstatic.

These books will go right into the eager hands of kids who will probably stay up all night to read them.

Then, they will get passed on from student to student, year to year, until they fall apart. Then, I will tape them together and more students will read them. Imagine how many lives just one book can touch.
