I teach in a low-income school district, where most of our students come from single-parent homes. The students in my building face the daily struggle of attending school daily without having the supplies and the basic understanding of how to be successful in the classroom. Our students want to learn and be successful but often need help in the areas of academics and social skills.
The students are faced with many challenges outside of the classroom.
They often have to watch their siblings after school because of their parent(s) working late, are responsible for taking care of their homes, and may participate in after-school activities. Many of our students do not have access to healthy and clean food for meals and snacks. The students want to do better but need guidance and support in all areas of their life to be able to learn skills necessary to get out of the cycle of poverty.
My Project
I work in a school district where over 85% of my students are on free and reduced-price lunch. This means many of them get the majority of their meals at school. Throughout the year, we are made aware of students that are experiencing homelessness.
I keep food in my room for students who need a snack throughout the day or some food to take home.
I'm requesting Granola Bars, breakfast items, and snack packs. Many of my students are hungry throughout the day and especially on the weekends. The snacks and breakfast bars help me to take away some of the pain of being hungry. I try to help give my students the comforts and compassion they don't always receive at home.
My fellow teachers and I work really hard to provide basic necessities to our students that are unable to get those items when they leave our building. The socks will give them something warm and clean for their feet. Throughout the year many of us purchase clothing items for our struggling students and these items will help alleviate some of the financial burden we take on each year.
