My Project

As a teacher, I have tried multiple strategies to coax kids into loving reading, but there is one thing that works every time - making sure that my classroom is filled with an abundant, wide variety of engaging books! For my rural Maine students, this includes books about fishing, raising chickens, accounts of girls who became famous scientists or inventors, cookbooks, graphic novels and other engaging texts that tie into the history we study, picture books that foster social-emotional awareness and empathy, and stories that bring us together as a classroom community.

Over the past seven years, as I have grown my classroom library, my students' love of reading has grown as well.

In various years I have pinched pennies, used my classroom budget, or tapped into the wonderful resource of DonorsChoose to furnish fresh texts for my students. It has proven to inspire and draw them in as readers every single time.

Though my classroom library has grown and that is wonderful, with most fourth graders reading 40-80 books per year, the books' covers and pages are becoming worn. Your help in updating and expanding the classroom library this year will make an impact on this fourth-grade class by stirring up a love of reading that will go with them far beyond this school year!
