My Students

Imagine working with children that are happy and eager to learn. Some of which never leave their community. With parents that grew up in the same community and went to the same schools. The only time they do leave the community is for a school trip, which is not possible due to the pandemic. The school I work in is in a low-income neighborhood with a large population of students in transitional housing.

Some of our students are born and raised in this community and never leave, not even for the day.

Additionally, we have a large immigration population from around the world who do not speak English. Due to limited language or limited funds students in this neighborhood do not get to experience the city like other kids their age. These days we use technology to let students see the world. I want to introduce my students to a world of foods, culture, experiences, and fun.

My Project

Getting a healthy start and entering school ready to learn. When students are hungry they are unable to learn. Our young ladies are in school from early in the morning until late in the afternoon. They receive breakfast and lunch during the school day, which is good for students that leave at the end of the day. For our girls that stay in school until 4 pm, they need a little snack to hold them over until the end of their day.

My Sister’s Keeper (MSK) is a New York City Department of Education Initiative to promote gender equity, empower and engage girls and young women in grades 4-12, including cisgender, transgender, gender expansive, and any other students who identify with the terms“girl“ or “women.”

Our club vision is to change life outcomes for girls and young women of color, build safe and supportive communities where girls feel valued, and create clear pathways to opportunity

Our mission is to bring together diverse groups of youth and provide them with access to experiences that build confidence, strengthen community and sisterhood, celebrate greatness, and further our goals of equity and inclusion. Consistent with DOE policy, all interested students in grades 4-12 are welcome to join.
