This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Please help us get some wonderful picture books for our classroom library! I currently teach first grade on the Southside of Chicago. I have 29 students enrolled in my class. According to the Illinois State Board of Education 98% of the students were below poverty income in 2008-2009.

All my students are English Language Learners (ELLS), which means that they speak a second language at home that is not English, plus they mostly come from low-income homes where they do not have much money to purchase books.

In my students’ homes books are a luxury that their parents cannot afford. Their reading comprehension and fluency would be improved in English if they were able to practice reading at home everyday. Unfortunately, my students' parents do not have the funds to purchase their children picture books and the neighborhood library is too far away and not within walking distance.

My Project

Since my students do not have many books at home to read, I am trying to incorporate more picture books into my classroom library that they can borrow on a daily basis. I would like to have the students check them out and be able to take them home for their enjoyment and of course to practice! Also, these chosen books are special because many are multicultural books that reflect some of my students’ backgrounds and this will make the books extra special and endearing to them. In addition, I am requesting a few books for myself that will help me improve my teaching. These books are great literature because they promote social justice and equality in the classroom. These books include titles such as "Rethinking Our Classrooms: Teaching for Equity and Justice, Vol.1 & 2", "The Real Ebonics Debate", and "Rethinking Early Childhood Education".

With your generosity, we can get some new books for our classroom library!

Reading can unlock many doors for my first graders and give them opportunities for a bright future. Please help foster a love for reading for my first graders; it is the best gift they can receive!
