My Students

Kids are not only hungry for stories and information, they are hungry for books that teach them about the world and themselves. Our library is small, but mighty and thanks to those who support literacy and promote the importance of reading, it's only getting stronger. Please help us keep growing.

Our students live in a rural area in the Midwest and attend a small high school of about 650 students.

Many of our students come from homes in which their parents or parent is struggling financially. It is a lower socioeconomic area that has been hit hard by economic struggles, job loss, and state budget cuts. Despite these obstacles, our students remain positive and continue to strive for success. Most importantly, they maintain pride in their school and community. Kids have no control over budget cuts and growing up in lower income homes where money is tight and it is our job as educators to protect them from the consequences of those struggles. The bottom line is that we need to work hard to lessen the brunt of unfortunate circumstances and provide our kids with the educational resources they need and deserve. Students need books that invite them into the transforming experience of becoming lifelong independent readers.

My Project

These books are tools we will use to strengthen our library collection and better serve the needs of our learning community. Everyone in the district will have access to them for as long as they are relevant to the needs of our students and staff. Students will use these materials for school and personal research, as well as entertainment. When you give to this project, you are giving to multiple classrooms throughout our district. Current and future students will utilize these materials, so your impact is far reaching and widespread. The wonderful thing about books is that so many individual and unique needs can be met by them at any given time. They may serve different purposes for different occasions, but the common thread is that they all serve good purposes and will continue to do so for years to come.

If you have had the experience of discovering a life-transforming book, you understand the impact winning this grant will have on our students.

Books provide entertainment, knowledge, self-discovery, questions, answers, etc. The beauty of books' impact is that the gifts they hold transform lives for a lifetime. Your gift will help students build empathy, literacy skills, and self-knowledge. Most importantly, winning this grant will help students achieve more in school and in life.
