Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are active learners who come into school every morning excited to learn. They often begin their day with independent reading. They are eager to have more books in our library to choose from as they build their reading stamina and challenge themselves to read more difficult texts.

Many of my students are first or second-generation immigrants who are learning English as a second language.

My school is an urban school with a high-needs population and a range of learning styles. Our school community is welcoming to all of our students and families. It is a warm, inviting atmosphere where the teachers truly believe in and support their students to be the best that they can be.

My Project

Every day my students engage in an extended period of independent reading time, reading both fiction and nonfiction texts. They are quickly engaged in the nonfiction topics we study as a class, but sometimes have a harder time finding the fiction books, authors, or series that they love. Our school does not have a library, so most of the books our students have access to are housed in our classroom library. With this project, we will be able to expand our library greatly and bring more books that the students have specifically requested to our class.

The look on a student's face when they get to choose a brand-new book from the library is priceless.

Many of our books are old and worn-out, so having new, engaging fiction books will really make a difference in how excited the they are about reading.
